Training the young in the Lord

Training the young in the Lord

I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. 14I write to you, dear children, because you know the Father. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

What really does it mean when this saying is used: "If you want to destroy a whole forest, cut the young trees." Even the Lord speaks of it when He says in His word; Proverbs 22:6, "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."

The Bible provides a clear and compelling mandate for training youth in the Lord, emphasizing the benefits for the individual, the family, and the future generation. The Bible repeatedly commands the instruction and discipleship of the next generation.

Training the youth ensures that the knowledge of God and His mighty works are passed down, preventing future generations from forgetting Him.

  • Psalm 78:5-7: “He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments,

Youth is the opportune time to lay a solid spiritual foundation before life’s inevitable challenges arise.

  • Ecclesiastes 12:1: “Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, ‘I have no pleasure in them.'”

  • 2 Timothy 3:14-15: “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”

God does not wait until people are old to use them. Youth are called to be examples and world-changers now.

  • 1 Timothy 4:12: “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” (The young are called to exemplary living, actively contributing to the community of faith.)

  • Jeremiah 1:7: But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak.”

Effective spiritual training leads to positive outcomes in the life of the individual and the community.

Training the youth in the Lord is a divine responsibility that is essential for generational faith and equips young people to live a life of wisdom, peace, and purpose for God’s glory.
